Mississippiana Vertical Files

The Mississippiana Vertical Files are a significant resource of information about Mississippi people, events, and places. It currently comprises circa 96 linear feet of articles and published materials such as brochures, programs, and maps, as well as selected unpublished materials, including some primary source material.

Although most of the materials date from the 1920s to the present, earlier materials are added as collected. Adding to the coverage and uniqueness of the files are early newspaper clippings which were originally collected by the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service and circulated upon request. These clipping files from Mississippi and some Memphis newspapers were retired to Special Collections when the service was discontinued.

Currently, selected Mississippi newspapers are read for content and articles are selected, assigned topical headings and photocopied for the files. This is particularly useful since most Mississippi newspapers are not indexed.

Using the Mississippiana Vertical Files list:

  • People may be found under their own names if there are three or more clippings concerning them.
  • Biographical files (Biography A, Biography B etc.) usually contain one or two items on the people included.
  • When searching the list, consider both specific and general topics that may contain materials.
  • Cross-references are found in the list, but are also found in the files and on the file folders.
